Cedar chests combine practical storage with the warmth and character of real wood. Traditionally used to hold blankets, linens, and treasured keepsakes, these timeless pieces can serve as both functional furniture and meaningful family heirlooms.

Rustic Red Door offers American-made cedar hope chests in a variety of hardwoods, including cedar, cherry, walnut, oak, hickory, and maple. Many designs feature cedar-lined interiors or cedar bottoms, allowing you to enjoy the appearance of your preferred hardwood on the outside with cedar inside.

For additional storage styles, explore our blanket chests, which include traditional wood storage chests in a range of designs.

Choosing the Right Cedar Hope Chest

When selecting a cedar storage chest, consider where it will be placed and what you plan to store. A chest at the foot of a bed can hold extra blankets and seasonal linens, while one in a living room or entryway can provide convenient storage for everyday items.

Our Waterfall cedar hope chests feature gently curved lids and are available in several sizes, including 36", 42", and 46" lengths. Select designs include anti-slam hinges, keyed locks, and optional interior trays to help organize smaller belongings.

Wood species and finish also influence the chest's appearance. Walnut offers rich brown tones, cherry brings warm color, and quartersawn oak features distinctive grain patterns. Each solid wood chest has natural variations that give it individual character.

Personalized Cedar Chests and Meaningful Gifts

A personalized cedar chest can become a special place to preserve family memories, childhood keepsakes, or items passed between generations. Engraving options on select designs allow you to add a name or other personal details.

Our personalized chests include additional styles with engraving options for gifts and special occasions.

Because these pieces are handcrafted from real wood, variations in grain and color are part of their natural beauty. Consider the available wood species, finishes, sizes, and storage features when choosing a chest that suits your home.

Frequently Asked Questions

A cedar chest typically refers to a storage chest made from cedar or featuring a cedar-lined interior. A hope chest traditionally holds keepsakes, linens, and treasured belongings intended to be saved for the future. Many hope chests incorporate cedar, so the terms are often used interchangeably.

Our collection includes solid cedar designs as well as hope chests made from hardwoods such as oak, cherry, walnut, hickory, and maple with cedar-lined interiors or cedar bottoms. This allows you to choose the exterior wood appearance you prefer while enjoying cedar inside. Construction details vary by model.

Cedar chests are commonly used to store blankets, quilts, seasonal linens, and family keepsakes. They can also provide attractive storage in bedrooms, living rooms, and other areas of the home. Cedar's natural aroma makes it a traditional choice for textile storage.

Aromatic cedar contains natural compounds that may help deter certain insects, making it a traditional material for storing textiles. However, a cedar chest is not a guaranteed moth-proof or pest-proof storage solution. Clean and thoroughly dry fabrics before storing them, and periodically inspect the contents.

Our Waterfall cedar hope chests are available in 36", 42", and 46" lengths, with different depths and heights depending on the size selected. Other chest designs may offer different dimensions. Check the product specifications for both the exterior measurements and usable interior storage space.

Many of our Waterfall cedar hope chests include keyed locks and anti-slam hinges. Features vary by design, so review the individual product details before ordering. Keep locking storage chests inaccessible to children during unsupervised play, and never allow children to climb inside.

Clean the exterior with a soft cloth and products appropriate for the wood finish. Avoid excessive moisture, harsh cleaners, and prolonged direct sunlight. For cedar-lined interiors, follow the manufacturer's care recommendations and avoid applying furniture polish or other coatings that could interfere with the cedar's natural aroma.
