What Makes Live Edge Dining Tables Unique?

Unlike a tabletop cut with uniformly straight edges, a live edge dining table preserves the natural contours of the wood along at least one edge. Curves, knots, grain patterns, and other characteristics become part of the finished design, giving each table an organic appearance shaped by the original wood.

Because these characteristics naturally vary, no two solid wood live edge dining tables will look exactly alike. Walnut is especially well suited to this style because its rich color and expressive grain pair naturally with an organic edge. Explore our Walnut Dining Tables to compare additional walnut designs.

Choosing Wood, Size & Base Style

Start with the dimensions of your dining space and the number of people you regularly seat. Live edge tables can be made in a range of dimensions, and the natural contours mean the width may vary somewhat along the tabletop.

Base selection also has a major influence on the finished design. A steel base can create contrast against the organic wood slab, while a wood base produces a more unified natural look. If you prefer a traditional straight-edged tabletop or want to compare other hardwood options, browse our complete collection of solid wood dining tables.

Custom Live Edge & Epoxy Dining Tables

Live edge furniture lends itself particularly well to customization because the wood itself helps determine the final appearance. Depending on the design, Rustic Red Door can customize dimensions, hardwood species, finish, edge treatment, and wood or steel base.

Epoxy can also be incorporated into natural voids and cracks or used to create a river between slabs. For designs where epoxy is the defining feature, explore our custom live edge river tables, or design your own with our custom epoxy tables.

When choosing a custom live edge dining table, consider the room dimensions, seating requirements, wood species, finish, edge profile, and base together. These details allow the natural character of the slab to remain the focal point while creating a table suited to your dining space.

QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

A live edge dining table preserves the natural edge of the wood rather than cutting every side into a perfectly straight line. The natural curves, grain, knots, and other characteristics of the wood become part of the table's finished appearance.

Yes. Rustic Red Door's live edge dining tables are crafted from solid hardwood rather than a manufactured surface designed to imitate live edge wood. The natural grain, contours, and variations of the slab are an important part of each table's design.

Several hardwoods can be used for live edge furniture, and the best choice depends largely on the grain and color you prefer. Walnut is a popular option within Rustic Red Door's collection because of its rich brown color and distinctive grain, while other hardwoods offer different tones and natural characteristics.

Yes. Natural edges, grain patterns, knots, voids, and other characteristics vary from one piece of wood to another. These differences mean the exact appearance of a solid wood live edge table cannot be perfectly duplicated.

Live edge describes a table that retains the wood's natural edge, while an epoxy river table incorporates epoxy between slabs or within natural areas of the wood. A table can feature both elements at once, but not every live edge dining table contains epoxy. Explore our custom live edge river tables for designs centered around wood and epoxy.

Yes. Rustic Red Door offers live edge tables paired with steel as well as wood base designs. Steel creates a strong visual contrast with the organic shape of the wood and can range from relatively simple forms to sculptural, hand-forged designs.

Yes. Depending on the design, customization can include dimensions, hardwood species, finish, edge treatment, epoxy, and base selection. Rustic Red Door also offers fully custom live edge tables for shoppers who need a more specific combination of size, material, and design details.

Yes, with end extensions. A live edge dining table can be made with extensions that attach to the ends of the table when you need extra seating. Middle leaves are not available, because the tabletop is a continuous natural slab that can't be split down the center. If you'd prefer a table with middle leaves, browse our extendable dining tables for additional options.
